Over lockdown, I have to admit to doing some serious binge-watching on TV streaming services. I eventually ran out of new content so decided to go back to some older films.
I watched the original Blade Runner film starring Harrison Ford. Created in 1982, the plot was set in the ‘relative future’ of November 2019. It was like opening a time capsule. The predicted future included new galactic colonies, flying cars, artificially intelligent, humanoid robots.
While many of the plot’s predictions were directionally right, others were completely off what has actually happened. It reminded me that there are limits in our ability to predict the future and worrying about what might or might not happen is rarely helpful. Sometimes it makes more sense to just focus and be in the present.
What future predictions have you seen that turned out to be completely wrong? Which ones have been right?
